Dragon, or Chimaera brooches, as some call them, seem to have been popular for a fairly short period between around 1875 and 1895. Most of them are French, although some very recognisable American examples were made, mostly  in Newport, Rhode Island.

This well modelled  example is French, with French assay marks on the catch for 18 carat gold, which is the only legal standard in France, and with a small diamond in its jaw. It has a brooch fitting, but there are also two small suspension loops on the back, so it can also be worn round the neck.  The wingspan is approximately 2 1/2 inches: 6 cms
